1929 Mask launches colourful masks with high protection
Singapore, 17 July 2020 – 1929 Mask today announced the launch of a range of colourful masks that are vibrantly stylish and highly protective. They retain their water-repellent and anti-microbial properties which are rarely present in most reusable masks.
The bright and bold shades are aimed at helping users inject some colour into their daily lives as mask-wearing becomes the norm amid the Covid-19 pandemic.
Keenon Lee, founder of 1929 Mask, said: “By using transfer printing, we are finally able to meet our customers’ demand for colourful reusable masks that are able to retain their water-repellent and anti-microbial properties.”
1929’s three-ply reusable masks were launched in March 2020 in response to the Singapore government’s call to local companies to help meet the shortage of masks as the coronavirus started to spread.
Mr Lee’s parents’ business, Rengitex, an established fabric manufacturer, quickly rose to the occasion and began producing navy blue and black masks from its factory in Batu Pahat, Malaysia. The masks are treated with water-repellent and anti-microbial properties, and both tested by international test centres to last for 100 washes.
These protective properties stain the masks when they react with colour pigments, making it a challenge to use colours other than dark blue and black.
Mr Lee said: “My father who is a chemist spent a lot of time and effort in the last few months experimenting with different ways of transfer printing so that we can produce colourful masks without compromising the water-repellent and anti-microbial properties of the masks.
“We have finally achieved a very positive result through transfer printing using disperse dyes and we can truly say 1929 masks now have both substance and style.”
During the transfer printing process, designs are printed indirectly onto the fabric by first being printed onto paper with disperse dyes and then transferred onto the textile.
Mr Lee added: “Colours can have a powerful effect on our emotions. It is our hope that these colourful masks can bring some cheer and lift the spirits while protecting our customers during the coronavirus outbreak.”
The range of 16 colours include Red Heather, Grey Heather, Sky Blue Heather, Navy Blue Heather, Black Floral, Red Floral, Grey Floral, Camo, Dotted Block – Navy, Dotted Block – Black, Vertical Dash, Japanese Wave, Shell, Mountain, Paint, and B/W Houndstooth.
All but five of the new masks are available for sale on 1929 Mask’s website at. https://1929mask.com for between $28 and $38 each. The five - the Heather and the Black Floral collections - will be available at the end of July. The new masks are available in adult size only while 1929’s original black and navy blue masks are available in children size as well, priced at $25 each.
